Welcome to “Nighttime On The Hill. A look at our institutional architecture bathed in warm colorful light. It’s a fact, night images say look here, and we always do. Enjoy!

This image is called Political Glow and it sure gets our attention. You should know that night images get more attention every time. I’ve gathered some after dinner images of the buildings on Parliament Hill.

Today, I’d like to take you on a visit of the Supreme Court of Canada’s Art-deco architecture, just west of Parliament Hill on Wellington Street in Ottawa.

Photography by Michel Loiselle The Supreme Court of Canada is the highest court of Canada, the final court of appeals in the Canadian justice system. Its decisions are the ultimate expression and application of Canadian law and binding upon all lower courts of Canada. It is composed of nine judges: the Chief Justice of Canada, The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, P.C. and eight Puisne Justices.

Court Calendar

The court sits for 18 weeks of the year beginning the first Monday of October and usually runs until the end of June and sometimes into July. Hearings only take place in Ottawa, although litigants can present oral arguments from remote locations by means of a video-conference system. The court’s hearings are open to the public. Most hearings are taped for delayed telecast in both of Canada’s official languages. When in session, the court sits Monday to Friday, hearing two appeals a day. A quorum consists of five members for appeals. A panel of nine justices hears most cases.

Law Clerks

Since 1967 the court has hired law clerks to assist in legal research. Law clerks conduct research, draft bench memoranda, and assist in drafting judgments, as well as any other research duties assigned by the law clerk’s judge such as drafting speeches or articles. Currently, each justice has three law clerks.

The Building

Construction began in 1939, with the cornerstone laid by Queen Elizabeth, consort to King George VI and later Queen Mother. It was designed by Ernest Cormier. The court began hearing cases in the new building by January 1946. The building is renowned for its Art Deco decorative details, including two candelabrum-style fluted metal lamp standards that flank the entrance, and the marble walls and floors of the grand interior lobby contrasting with the châteauesque roof.

Aerial Supreme Court In 2000, it was named by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada as one of the top 500 buildings produced in Canada during the last millennium.

Two flagstaffs have been erected in front of the building. A flag on one is flown daily, while the other is hoisted only on those days when the court is in session. Also located on the grounds are several statues, notably:

Parliament Hill Like Never Before

Since 2006, I’ve turned my camera into a politically speaking machine. I don’t need to say much as the photos speak volumes about the Parliamentary Precinct and all its gothic architecture.

Capturing Parliament Hill with a creative eye

Canadian Parliament photos by Michel Loiselle I’m Michel Loiselle, Graphic Designer/Photographer from Ottawa. I’ve been capturing our Canadian Parliament digitally since 2006. The collection took 7 years to complete. (Part-time, while working at the House of Commons on the Hill). It was evident from day one that this Parliament had many faces and personalities. Because of its configuration and architecture, you get a different view whenever you change angles. Here is the view most tourists see from the main gates on Wellington Street in Ottawa. It’s a great view!

Moving north across the river to Gatineau will give you a totally different Parliament with the Library and the Royal Alexandra bridge. It’s fantastic! This photo, Bridged Parliament, taken during magic hour, also features the World Exchange Plaza with its original ball clock on the roof.

From the east side during fall, yet an entirely different view of Parliament Hill. Every angle and season offers something new. I photograph Parliament year-round and am thankful for the experience. There’s something about taking your time with a photo while listening to mellow jazz on the iPod and giving in to the beauty. The gothic architecture simply takes me away every time.

The conceptual image is one that lets you interpret the scene in many ways. Someone thinks one thing while someone else’s idea is the opposite. See the process with this photo. Here we have colorful tents lined-up (to accommodate different schools visiting a water park). Someone else says it reminds them of crayon tips in the sky. Another thinks of the circus, etc. It could mean the 5 elements of your company Vision Statement. The many interpretations make it a strong candidate for conceptual imaging.

When graphic designers need inspiration, they turn to conceptual imaging to communicate complex ideas. The Lakeside Chairs image fills that need. You may want to portray teamwork or total zen, no matter, it will communicate strongly. The key is to keep the image generic and let the viewer fill in the blanks.

Of course this is a whole new look at duets. The mom and daughter team could be used for parties, events, office gags, etc. A conceptual photo can generate so many different feelings and ideas.

This image, Barbed Wire Life – from the Colors collection does the same thing. An ideal candidate for editorial tie-ins like for a prison life feature article. That’s why creatives and business professionals come back to conceptual imagery for their special projects.

These golf balls are a perfect example of a conceptual image. Although it only shows coloured balls, the different one invites all kinds of concepts. You’re probably thinking of one now. Here is a caption that could work: “There’s One In Every Family”. Other scenarios could be “Standing Out In A Crowd”, “Be original”, “Star Employees Always Stand Out!”. Finding conceptual photos gets easier with practice.

This image is powerful on its own, but when we add the cancer logo to this Boxing Gloves image, it makes it stronger. No words needed here! We don’t have to be complicated. Some photos are so visual and poweful, your mind takes milliseconds to decipher the message.

No matter how you look at this “flags” lineup, it’s a striking example of a conceptual image that demands attention. Here are possible scenarios that the concept can communicate.

“All Eyes On Canada” – “Canada & Friends” – “Canada Is Hosting The World” etc.

So, conceptual images need to be simple and powerful. You’ll know one when you see it. The ideal place to study photos for potential candidates, is a stock photo agency. There, you can take your time and find the right photo. You can also type “concept” in your search to get those images that have been tagged conceptual.

Practice looking beyond the image for tie-ins to your projects

Look at images and concept them for yourself, it’s fun and gets easier with practice.
