Our Gothic Parliament

Update – March 2017

The Canadian Parliament is a statement in Gothic Revival architecture

Canadian Parliament photos by Michel Loiselle

The political lines to follow inside Parliament are evident by the beautiful gothic revival style that is the Rotunda. The workmanship and detail make the visit worthwhile as soon as you enter.

Consider this image, October Politics and how it gives a new feeling to the subject. It’s alive with color and truly inviting. Graphic Designers can get at least one photo of each season to help with specific campaigns.

This Spring Parliament photo certainly says spring with pride and energy. See how CERC has used the image for an online magazine article.

Ensuring that all seasons are included in the Canadian Parliament portfolio makes the collection more valuable to clients.

The fact that this image is on an angle also helps attract attention to your story and get your message across more readily.

Keeping the Designer in mind when creating images is important. Clients want choice.

The Political Glow image below certainly says summer with attitude! It’s a great image to have when you really need to say CANADA in your message.

Ghost Photographer

CERC Annual Conference 2012 - Canadian Parliament photo by Michel LoiselleUpdate – March 2018

Stock Photography – The story of one photo

Canadian Parliament photos by Michel LoiselleIt all started with this image. I license images to graphic designers at communications firms, advertising agencies and publishing houses. Those who purchase it usually do so for their clients needing a Web site, brochure, cover page or newsletter. The client may have requested a very “Canadian feel” for the piece and the designer found my Spring Politics photo on a stock photo site such as Shutterstock.com. In fact, most clients never know that I’m the photographer for their project. To them, it’s just (ghost) stock photography. Who takes the photo is not as important as getting the right image. So how do I know where my stock photos are on the web?

Reverse Search and Finding the Image

I don’t always know who’s using my photos so I call on Google Images. It works by uploading your actual photo in the search box and letting Google find it for you on the web. I call it “Reverse Search”, instead of entering keywords, you enter an image. That’s how I discovered the CERC Annual Conference e-mag article – Targeting talentism. Canadian Parliament photos by Michel Loiselle

When I saw how they used and designed around my photo, I was glad… “this looks great”, the look is clean, tasteful right down to the use of fonts. When taking this photo, I knew that designers would have fun with this area, making the image a good candidate for a cover page.

So one more photo has gone full circle. I’ve created the image, published it to stock agencies and in the Canadian Parliament collection, then licensed it. I found the client with reverse search, and now can appreciate how it’s being used. It’s fun to see how other images turn out! As a stock photographer, it is very humbling to see the designers of CERC do such a great job with the photo. We always hope for this kind of turnout for our images and I get a good feeling when it happens to me, I feel good about what I do.

Canadian Pride

Respecting Canada and its Institution

Canadian Parliament photos by Michel LoiselleMeet Michel Loiselle, an Ottawa Graphic Designer / Photographer who fell in love with the gothic architecture of the Canadian Parliament. As for respecting the institution, he’s built a 25-year career on Parliament Hill as a Graphic Designer. “I’ve been taking photos of Parliament since 2006 and consider the collection ready for show”, says Loiselle. He continues to add to the collection. As it grew, he wanted more, wanted to portray it in ways that showed pride, history, excitement, education and national community. The Parliament collection is now available for sale to publishing houses, advertising and communications firms through stock agencies such as Mostphotos, Shutterstock, BIGSTOCK and Fotolia, but more and more people are buying them for their homes. It shows the respect Canadians have for their freedom. The various Parliament buildings are showcased in scenes such as Seasons, Inside, Night, Canada Day, Evening, and Christmas. Great care is taken to ensure that images are of the highest quality for magazine publication. The photos are also used as posters for Canadian events and conferences.

Canadian Parliament photos by Michel LoiselleUnusual Angles and Perspectives

Canadian Parliament photos by Michel LoiselleThe collection features different perspectives as in this Parliamentary image behind the Alexandra bridge. You’ll agree that it has its own feeling! Because he’s from Ottawa, Michel returns again and again to Parliament Hill to get the best times of day or special days when just the right seasonal effect is needed. Canadian Parliament photos by Michel Loiselle

Canadian Parliament photos by Michel LoiselleThis image, Political Justice, is another example of Michel’s dedication to originality. By combining justice and political icons, the photograph becomes a story, concept or metaphor, giving designers more flexibility for imaging. All this thinking goes into creating an original collection.

By making available various buildings, the collection becomes more important. For example, if you wish to show where Members of Parliament have offices on Parliament Hill, simply turn to the Confederation building, expanding the reach and giving designers more options. These photos of the Confederation building taken in summer, winter and spring, show the diversity of the Canadian Parliament collection. Creating it takes time as the seasons pass, a few images are added and different feelings are achieved.

Working With Designers

UPDATE – March 2018

Anatomy of a Parliament photo

The Canadian Parliament in winter at dusk in Ottawa, Canada. Photo by Michel LoiselleI provide stock photos to art/creative directors, graphic designers and business professionals. When creating images, I think of what the designer may need even before I take the shot. As a graphic designer myself, most times, I’ll need to add text and title such as for this coffee table book project.

Consider this image: Path to Politics, from the Canadian Parliament photo collection. It’s ideal for a Powerpoint title page or report cover. Simple is key. The Parliament is lit just enough without having blown highlights and the magic hour is just starting; not too dark, not too light. The rock creates tension and reinforces a low perspective view. The winter season brings a crisp, cool feel to the piece. Finally, a beaten path shows that many people walk here, while the sunset is placed to promote left-to-right viewing. See what I mean with this visual.

image.jpeg

The shot was taken with designers in mind. There is plenty of copy space on top and bottom; the image works well. When shooting, I’m thinking of these concepts to help creatives achieve their communications objectives.

Canadian Parliament photos by Michel LoiselleHere is a fictitious layout to help us visualize a project. Once we see the possibilities, it becomes easier to select cover photos, not just for their attractiveness, but for their overall functionality.

Even with text, the piece doesn’t feel crowded or overdone. With a few tweaks, this could work out quite well.

The Canadian Parliament in winter, seen from Major's Hill Park in Ottawa. Photo by Michel LoiselleProviding Options

Designers need variety, so I like to create a series on a same theme. By providing similar scenes, you get more options, like this vertical image of the same location in the morning. Same principle here, space for text on top and bottom. Horizontal and vertical photo solutions just make sense. Taking this a step further, another photo shows the rock in summer. As a photographer/designer I ensure that these choices are available.

Taking it Further

Now we’veCanadian Parliament photos by Michel Loiselle gone full circle and finished the product in the new layout. We did not resize any of the elements; just a few positioning adjustments and the job is almost done.

In these situations, the landscape cover could be used for Powerpoint while the vertical version is ideal for a report cover or poster. This way, consistency is preserved and the pieces take on a more branded feel.

When I’m photographing, I sometimes picture the textual information in my mind in order to get the perfect cover page image.

See the Canadian Parliament photo collection for more turn-key visuals.

Thanks for visiting and have a great evening.

Michel
